PART 2 — The Place Sofia Went Instead #8

Sofia did not keep walking toward The Pines Manor.

After twenty minutes in the rain, a black SUV pulled onto the shoulder beside her.

The rear door opened.

Her mother stepped out.

Elena didn’t say anything at first.

She simply took one look at Sofia’s soaked coat, muddy shoes, and trembling hands.

Then she wrapped her arms around her.

Sofia held herself together for exactly three seconds.

After that, she cried.

Not because Teresa had rejected her.

Not because Mariana had mocked her.

Because Javier had watched.

And done nothing.

Elena gently pulled back.

“Do you want to go to the manor?”

Sofia wiped her face.

“No.”

“Good.”

That answer came too quickly.

Sofia almost laughed.

“Mom.”

“I’m serious.”

Elena opened the SUV door.

“Where do you want to go?”

Sofia thought about it.

Then gave an address.

Not a hotel.

Not the airport.

A law office in downtown Syracuse.

Elena looked at her.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Thirty minutes later, Javier started calling.

Again.

And again.

Sofia watched his name appear on the screen.

She didn’t answer.

Then Teresa called.

Then Mariana.

Then Javier again.

Finally, a text arrived.

Please call me. Mom didn’t know who you were.

Sofia stared at it.

That sentence told her everything.

Not:

We were cruel.

Not:

I should have defended you.

Not:

Leaving you beside a road in heavy rain was wrong.

Just:

Mom didn’t know who you were.

As if Sofia’s connection to Altavista was the only reason she deserved basic decency.

She turned the phone facedown.

At the law office, Elena’s attorney, Marisol Vega, was already waiting.

Sofia had met her before.

Marisol looked at Sofia’s wet clothes.

Then at Elena.

“What happened?”

Sofia told her.

Everything.

Including the family group chat.

Mariana had forgotten one important detail.

Sofia was still in it.

She opened the messages.

Marisol read them slowly.

Don’t let her inside when she gets there.

First lesson for the new girl.

Then several laughing emojis.

Marisol looked up.

“And your husband?”

“He saw all of it.”

“Did he respond?”

“No.”

That hurt more when someone else said it aloud.

Marisol leaned back.

“What do you want to do?”

Sofia looked at her mother.

Then at the rain outside.

“I’m not going to The Pines Manor.”

“That part is easy.”

“I’m not going home with Javier tonight either.”

Elena said nothing.

Marisol nodded.

“Do you feel unsafe with him?”

Sofia thought carefully.

“No. Not physically.”

“But?”

“But I don’t trust him.”

That was the truth.

The deepest one.

She had married a man who let his family humiliate her because correcting them was inconvenient.

And now that money was involved, suddenly everyone was desperate to reach her.

Marisol helped arrange a hotel room under Sofia’s own name.

Then she advised her to preserve every message and video.

Not because Sofia had already decided on divorce.

She hadn’t.

But because she needed a clear record of what happened before the family started rewriting it.

And they started rewriting it almost immediately.

At The Pines Manor, Teresa was furious.

Not ashamed.

Furious.

“She tricked us!”

The general manager stared at her.

“How?”

“She never told us who her mother was.”

Javier looked sick.

“She did tell me.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Teresa went silent.

Mariana lowered her phone.

“What?”

Javier rubbed both hands over his face.

“Sofia told me her mother ran a hospitality company.”

Teresa snapped,

“You said it was some hotel business.”

“It is.”

“A company like Altavista is not ‘some hotel business,’ Javier.”

He looked at her.

“I didn’t know how large it was.”

That wasn’t completely true.

He knew enough.

He had been to Elena’s home.

He had seen the staff.

The cars.

The security.

But Sofia never discussed money, and Javier enjoyed pretending it wasn’t important.

Until suddenly it was.

Then the general manager said something that made Teresa sit down.

“The Altavista contract wasn’t just for weddings.”

He pulled out a folder.

“It included executive retreats, holiday events, and preferred catering for three years.”

Teresa’s face drained.

“How much?”

He gave her the projected figure.

Nearly $1.4 million in revenue over the contract period.

The estate badly needed it.

What Sofia didn’t know was that The Pines Manor was already struggling.

Repairs had been delayed.

Two large events had canceled.

And Teresa had taken out a loan against part of the property to keep operations running.

The Altavista agreement was supposed to stabilize everything.

Mariana whispered,

“Mom…”

Teresa turned on Javier.

“Fix this.”

He stared at her.

“How?”

“Go get your wife.”

“She isn’t answering.”

“Then find her.”

Javier grabbed his coat.

But before he reached the door, his father finally spoke.

Rafael Alcantara had been quiet through all of it.

Too quiet.

“Sit down.”

Teresa glared at him.

“Not now.”

“Sit.”

Something in his voice stopped everyone.

Javier slowly lowered himself into a chair.

Rafael looked at his wife.

“Did you leave Sofia at the terminal because you thought she was poor?”

Teresa’s face tightened.

“I wanted to see whether she expected special treatment.”

“In a thunderstorm?”

“It was raining.”

“You told her to walk nine miles.”

“She could have called a taxi.”

Rafael stared at her.

“Then why didn’t you simply tell her to call one?”

No answer.

Because it had never been about transportation.

It had been about humiliation.

Then Rafael looked at Mariana.

“And you filmed it?”

Mariana swallowed.

“It was a joke.”

“Was Sofia laughing?”

Silence.

Finally, Rafael looked at Javier.

“And you sat there.”

Javier’s eyes dropped.

“Yes.”

Rafael nodded slowly.

“Then perhaps losing that contract is not the worst thing that happened today.”

Javier looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“Your wife learned exactly what happens when your mother mistreats her.”

He paused.

“You watch.”

That sentence destroyed whatever defense Javier had left.

Then his phone rang.

Sofia.

Everyone stood.

Javier answered immediately.

“Sofia.”

Her voice was calm.

“I need you to listen.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“You can apologize later.”

He went quiet.

“I’m staying at a hotel tonight.”

“I’ll come get you.”

“No.”

“Sofia—”

“I said no.”

Teresa whispered,

“Put her on speaker.”

Sofia heard her.

“Is your mother there?”

Javier hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Sofia’s voice became even calmer.

“Then she can hear this too.”

Teresa stepped closer.

“Sofia, darling, there’s clearly been a terrible misunderstanding.”

Sofia almost laughed.

“No.”

There was a pause.

“You understood exactly what you were doing.”

Teresa went silent.

Sofia continued.

“You thought I was someone you could humiliate without consequences.”

“That is not—”

“And the saddest part is that you still think the consequence is losing my mother’s contract.”

Nobody spoke.

Javier closed his eyes.

Sofia said,

“The contract belongs to Altavista. That decision is Mom’s.”

Then she addressed her husband.

“My decision is about us.”

His face changed.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I’m not coming to The Pines Manor.”

“Tonight?”

“Not this trip.”

Javier stood.

“Sofia, please.”

“I need space.”

Then she said something that made Teresa suddenly look frightened.

“And tomorrow morning, I’m meeting with someone about the house.”

Javier frowned.

“What house?”

“The one we live in.”

Teresa’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

Sofia took a breath.

“Because Javier told me last month that his name had finally been added to the deed.”

The room went completely silent.

Rafael turned toward his son.

“What deed?”

Javier stopped breathing.

Sofia continued.

“I checked tonight.”

A pause.

“His name was never added.”

Javier went pale.

Teresa looked at him.

Then at Rafael.

And Sofia finally understood why.

The house she and Javier had been living in for two years wasn’t owned by Javier at all.

It was owned by a trust.

A trust connected to The Pines Manor.

And according to the documents Marisol had just pulled—

Teresa had quietly used it as collateral for the estate’s business loan.

Without ever telling Sofia.
