PART 12 – The Repayment Agreement Was Signed But Trust Could Not Be Repaid In Installments

The settlement took longer than Ryan expected.

His attorney requested time to collect the household financial records.

Allison explained that repayment promises were useful only if the amounts and payment schedule were realistic.

Ryan's mortgage, home equity balance, and living expenses left less spare income than he had claimed.

Martin reviewed the figures and identified several charges that belonged to the failed project.

Some were disputed between Ryan and his business associate.

Those claims would have to be addressed separately.

The fifteen thousand missing from my account remained the central sum in our discussion.

The failed check for eighteen thousand five hundred was treated as an attempted payment, not a second completed loss.

The old family loan also remained separate.

We documented the six thousand dollars still unpaid on that loan without hiding it inside the other transaction.

Ryan proposed to repay the unauthorized transfer over several years.

His lawyer drafted an agreement.

Allison asked for revisions.

I learned to read every paragraph slowly.

I asked what happened if Ryan missed payments.

I asked whether signing the agreement would affect my rights concerning the disputed bank transaction.

I asked whether either side was making promises about police or prosecutors that they had no authority to make.

Allison made sure I understood what I could and could not control.

We did not promise that a civil agreement could erase a criminal investigation.

We did not assume every reported claim would produce charges.

We considered legal fees, uncertainty, and the strain of continuing proceedings.

After several rounds of changes, I agreed to a written repayment arrangement with a modest initial payment and scheduled monthly installments.

Ryan provided verified account information and consented to regular statements showing compliance.

The agreement addressed the unauthorized transfer and the separate family loan in distinct sections.

It did not call the forged signature a misunderstanding.

The first payment arrived on time.

I looked at the bank notification without smiling.

Money mattered.

But I could not measure what had happened by the amount he repaid that month.

Megan filed a household budget with a credit counselor and began working with her own lawyer to understand the home equity documents.

I respected her for doing that.

I did not give her cash.

She stopped asking.

Ryan sent me an email after the agreement was signed.

It began with an apology.

He said he had been ashamed of failing in business.

He said he had convinced himself the money was an advance on an inheritance.

He admitted that neither Daniel nor I had agreed to such a thing.

Then he wrote about Christmas.

He had known for weeks that Megan's family expected them.

He also knew I had been cooking for three.

He left the conversation to Megan because he did not want to hear my disappointment.

When she suggested sending a card by courier, he let her.

He apologized for that specific choice.

I appreciated the detail.

It told me he understood what he was apologizing for.

I wrote back two days later.

Thank you for explaining.

Please continue making the agreed payments.

I am not ready for ordinary visits.

I will contact you when that changes.

After sending it, I walked to the backyard and stood beside Daniel's crooked bird feeder.

A sparrow pecked at scattered seed.

I wished Daniel could tell me whether I had done the right thing.

Then I remembered his letter.

He had not asked me to punish Ryan.

He had asked me to protect myself.

I went inside and marked the first payment in my notebook.

Beside it I wrote the next due date.

I did not write forgiven.

I was not ready to use that word.
