Part 2 — The Secret Frank Took to His Grave #4

The woman stepped aside.

I entered slowly.

The house smelled faintly of lavender and old books.

Everything inside was neat.

Almost too neat.

Framed photographs lined the hallway wall.

At first, I barely looked at them.

Then one stopped me cold.

A little girl stood between two adults.

She was maybe three years old.

Dark hair.

Round cheeks.

A crooked smile.

My crooked smile.

I moved closer.

“That’s me.”

The woman nodded.

“Yes.”

My pulse thudded in my ears.

“Who are you?”

She sat down carefully.

“My name is Evelyn Mercer.”

The name meant nothing to me.

Then she reached for one of the photographs.

The woman beside me in the picture looked younger than Evelyn.

But the resemblance was obvious.

“That was my daughter.”

I stared at her.

“My mother?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“Then who?”

She looked at me for several seconds.

“Your biological mother.”

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because my mind rejected the sentence.

“My mother was Diane.”

“Diane raised you.”

“She gave birth to me.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

I stepped backward.

“That’s impossible.”

“I know what you were told.”

“You don’t know anything about what I was told.”

“I know because I helped create the lie.”

That silenced me.

Evelyn opened a drawer and removed an old folder.

Inside was a birth certificate.

My name was there.

But the woman listed under mother was not Diane.

It was:

Laura Mercer.

I read it three times.

“Who is Laura?”

“My daughter.”

“And my father?”

Evelyn looked away.

That hesitation frightened me.

“Who was he?”

“A man named Thomas Vale.”

I had never heard the name.

“Were they married?”

“No.”

“Then how did I end up with Diane and Frank?”

Evelyn folded her hands tightly.

“Because Laura was in danger.”

According to Evelyn, my biological mother had been twenty-two when she met Thomas.

He was older.

Wealthy.

Charismatic.

And dangerous.

Not in the dramatic way people recognize immediately.

In the quieter way.

Control.

Threats.

Isolation.

Money.

By the time Laura became pregnant, she was already trying to leave him.

“He told her if she took you, he would make sure she never saw you again.”

I felt sick.

“So she gave me away?”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head quickly.

“She tried to protect you.”

That was where Diane came in.

Diane and Laura had been childhood friends.

Closer than sisters.

When Laura realized Thomas had people watching her, she made a desperate plan.

For a short time, Diane would pretend I was hers.

Just until Laura could disappear safely.

Frank agreed.

He had only recently started seeing Diane then.

He barely knew me.

Yet he agreed anyway.

“What happened to Laura?”

Evelyn’s face changed.

“She disappeared.”

My breath caught.

“Disappeared?”

“Three months after you went to live with Diane.”

“Did she abandon me?”

“No.”

Evelyn’s voice broke.

“She never got the chance to come back.”

Laura’s car had been found near a river.

No body.

No confirmed explanation.

Police treated it as a likely accident.

Evelyn never believed that.

Neither did Frank.

“Thomas?”

I whispered.

“He was never charged.”

Of course he wasn’t.

People like that rarely left obvious fingerprints.

“Then why didn’t Diane tell me?”

“Because she promised Laura.”

My anger rose.

“For decades?”

“At first, the promise was supposed to last until you were safe.”

“Safe from what?”

Evelyn reached for another folder.

“From him finding you.”

Thomas Vale had spent years searching.

Private investigators.

Legal requests.

Old contacts.

He never had proof that Diane was raising Laura’s child.

But he suspected.

Frank realized it first.

That was why he moved us twice when I was young.

I remembered those moves.

I had always been told they were about work.

They weren’t.

They were about me.

“Did my mother know?”

“Diane knew everything.”

I thought about her.

The woman I had called Mom.

The woman who died when I was still too young to understand grief.

“She died protecting this?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn nodded.

“And after she died, Frank had a choice.”

“He could have sent me away.”

“He could have.”

“But he didn’t.”

“No.”

Evelyn smiled through tears.

“He doubled down.”

Frank had legally secured guardianship.

Changed schools.

Updated records.

Blocked old contacts.

He built an ordinary life around me so carefully that I never suspected anything extraordinary existed underneath it.

Every lunch he packed.

Every birthday.

Every school play.

All of it happened while he was carrying a secret that did not even begin with him.

My anger softened into something more complicated.

“But why tell me now?”

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

“Because Thomas Vale died six months ago.”

I went still.

“He’s dead?”

“Yes.”

“Then I was finally safe.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t Frank tell me six months ago?”

“Because there was one more problem.”

Of course there was.

“What?”

Evelyn stood.

“Come with me.”

She led me into a small back room.

A metal lockbox sat on the desk.

Inside were letters.

Dozens of them.
