Claire invited me to a quiet lunch a week later.
She told me Dereck had finally stopped saying I overreacted.
"He told me he used your information because he was certain he could persuade you," she said.
I nodded.
"That's what he told me too."
"He says Adam convinced him it was normal."
"Adam didn't marry me. Dereck did."
Claire accepted that.
She had her own feelings about Adam, but she did not ask me to share them.
We talked instead about work, her garden, and the nephew she was helping through college.
It was the first conversation in weeks that did not begin and end with paperwork.
That night Dereck sent a long email.
He named specific things he had done.
He admitted giving Adam personal information without asking me.
He acknowledged allowing my name to appear on an application after I had refused to invest.
He acknowledged knowing that a credit check might happen.
He apologized for blaming me when I discovered the forms.
He did not insist that love excused the decisions.
He also said he could not promise I would trust him again.
I appreciated that more than the earlier messages about the beach.
But an apology was not proof of lasting change.
I forwarded the financial portions to Lena and kept the original email.
Then I wrote Dereck a brief reply.
"I read your message. I need time. Please continue handling the legal questions through counsel."
He answered, "I understand."
It was the first response from him in weeks that did not include an argument.
The next morning I went to our house with a friend to collect another suitcase.
Dereck had arranged to be away.
In the hallway, our anniversary photograph still hung beside the mirror.
I took it down to dust behind it.
Then I put it back.
I wasn't ready to decide what photographs belonged in the house.
I was ready to decide where I would sleep that night.
I drove back to Mom's.
